Fuel Up To Play60: School-Wide Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Initatives


[ MUSIC ]>>WELL, THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT’S ROLE IN FUEL TO PLAY 60 WAS BASICALLY TO GET IT UP AND ROLLING. I TALKED TO THE PRINCIPALS AND TRIED TO FIND SOMEBODY THAT WOULD GIVE SUPPORT TO THE PROGRAMS. SO I TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO APPLY FOR GRANT FUNDING. I FOUND OUT THAT WHEN THERE’S MONEY ATTACHED AND YOU GO TO A PRINCIPAL AND YOU SAY, “I HAVE FUNDS “TO SPEND ON YOUR BUILDING,” THEY JUMP ON BOARD AND THEN THEY WANT TO SUPPORT WHOLE-HEARTEDLY WHAT WE’RE DOING. SO I BASICALLY GOT THE PROGRAM UP AND RUNNING AND THEN THE PRINCIPAL HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN MAKING SURE IT CONTINUES. SHE’S JUST TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.>>MY ROLE IN FUEL UP TO PLAY 60, I’M CO-DIRECTOR WITH THE FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR AND I’M ALSO THE PERSON THAT GETS IT ALL INTO MOTION. SHE KIND OF OVERSEES IT, BUT I’M THE PERSON HERE IN THE BUILDING THAT GETS IT ALL GOING– MAKING HER IDEAS FIT WITH ELEMENTARY KIDS. PICKING MY ELEMENTARY KIDS’ BRAINS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY’RE INTERESTED IN DOING– WHAT MOTIVATES THEM TO EXERCISE. WHAT MOTIVATES THEM TO EAT HEALTHY. THAT WOULD BE MY MAIN ROLE.>>WHAT I LIKED BEST ABOUT FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 IS WAS THAT WE GOT TO TRY DIFFERENT FOODS AND WE GOT TO GO TO FORD FIELD AND EXERCISE WITH SOME OF THE NFL PLAYERS FROM THE DETROIT LIONS.>>WHAT I LIKED BEST WAS THAT WE CAN GO TO FORD FIELD AND TRY ALL THESE NEW FOODS. AND ANOTHER THING THAT I LIKED WAS THAT WE GOT TO EXERCISE.>>ORIGINALLY, WE HAD ABOUT BI-WEEKLY MEETINGS WITH THE STUDENT GROUP. THEY CAME OVER– I HAD ANOTHER PERSON INVOLVED AT THAT TIME AND SHE GOT TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER BUILDING, SO WE CONTINUED THE MEETINGS WITH THE TEAM AND I TURNED IT OVER TO THE PRINCIPAL AND SHE WAS HAVING MEETINGS WITH THE TEAM. ALSO, IN ANY ACTIVITY THAT GOES ON AT THE BUILDING, I TRY TO BE A PART OF IT. SO I COME OVER AND SUPPORT OUR TASTE TEST TUESDAYS. I SUPPORTED OUR FUEL UP TO PLAY KICK OFF. I SUPPORTED THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS, WHICH WAS– WE CHANGED IT TO FITMAS. WHICH INCLUDED THE 12 TASTES OF CHEESE AFTER THEY DID THEIR FITNESS ACTIVITY. I COME OVER, I HELP SUPPORT MY FOOD SERVICE STAFF– PREPARES THE FOOD. I COME OVER AND TRY TO BE A PART OF THE ACTIVITY AND SUPPORT THEM. WHEN YOU’RE AROUND KIDS ALL DAY, YOU DO SEE THEM TIRING OUT FROM THINGS YOU WOULD THINK SHOULDN’T TIRE THEM OUT. OR EVEN SOMETIMES THEIR KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF A FOOD– WHEN WE STARTED THE SALAD BAR, KIDS MAYBE NOT KNOWING IT WAS BROCCOLI AND CAULIFLOWER AND SAYING, “I WANT THAT,” AND REALIZING THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE BASE– ALL OF THEM. SO BETWEEN KNOWING THAT THE PHYSICAL EXERCISE PIECE IS IMPORTANT AND ALSO KNOWING WHAT IT DOES FOR LEARNING WHEN WE EXERCISE– WHAT IT DOES FOR LEARNING IN YOUR BRAIN AND IT GETS YOUR BRAIN BACK OPEN FOR LEARNING. SO BETWEEN ALL THAT, LIKE IT ALL JUST FLOWED AND FIT INTO FUEL UP TO PLAY 60. [ MUSIC ]
